Are You Ready for the First Day of School?
Tips to make it easier.
by Sally Allen

Give yourself plenty of time to get organized before the school year begins.      Make a task list. Schedule time on your calendar.

Schedule doctor / dentist appointments and haircuts.

Have all medical records and emergency information updated and located in an assigned location.

Good time to sort through summer clothing. Bring in and sort through winter      clothing. Does it fit? Is it worn? Does it need repair? Give away and recycle.

Good time to bond with family members. Make a list of clothing needs for school or work.

Create a “home” for school and/or office supplies. Create a “home” for book bags and briefcases near the exit door.

Create a calendar year from Fall through Spring for tracking of family schedules (erasable white boards are great for this). Post for all to see.

Routines help to keep the family organized and stay on track. Realistic guidelines will help children before and after school and bedtime.

Allow children to be part of the decision-making process regarding family chores. They will be more likely to buy into the assignments. Consider rotating chores, weekly/monthly.

I like to say, “A family that eats together, stays together.” Dinner time is a golden opportunity to stay in touch.

Now go and enjoy the rest of the year.
